Nov. 13--The Tony Rice Unit was named best instrumental band by the International Bluegrass Music Association in 1991 and 1995. But, believe it or not, this is the group's first all-instrumental album.

There's a reason for that, of course. Rice, who celebrated 30 years in bluegrass this year, had become a much sought after lead singer by the time he formed this group in 1985.

But in 1994, he began experiencing voice problems. The diagnosis was muscle tension dysphonia, a condition that forced him to stop singing.

Rice expects to recover his vocal abilities in the future. But for now, he's one of the best guitarists …
