Nov. 23--Paxton Media Group Inc., owner of the Paducah Sun and 27 other daily newspapers, announced Wednesday that it will purchase the Messenger-Inquirer.

The sale of the Owensboro paper by Dallas-based Belo Corp. to Paxton is expected to be finalized at the end of this year, said David Paxton, president and chief executive officer of Paxton Media Group, which is headquartered in Paducah.

Messenger-Inquirer Publisher Ed Riney announced the purchaser during a brief, late-afternoon gathering of Messenger-Inquirer employees in the office foyer.

"I'm looking forward to getting to know the Paxtons and working with them," Riney said later. …
