Longmont, Colo.-Based Satellite Maker to Cut a Quarter of Its Staff.

Dec. 2--EarthWatch Inc. will cut 48 employees, about a quarter of its staff, in the wake of a failed satellite launch on Nov. 21.

The Longmont-based company will place some of the workers, who come from virtually every department, with two local companies that are closely tied to EarthWatch, spokesman Chuck Herring said. Each employee will receive a severance package, he said.

EarthWatch hopes to hire some of the workers back as its next satellite launch -- scheduled for mid2001 -- approaches, Herring said.

"As we get closer to full operations we'll have to staff back up, and hopefully we can get some of these people …
