Dec. 12--Mighty SBC Communications, which announced more than a year ago that it would be entering the Twin Cities market, seems to be getting closer to selling telecommunication services here.
The Texas-based telecom giant, a combination of Pacific Bell, Southwestern Bell, Ameritech and other phone companies, says it expects to start offering Twin Cities residential and business customers a mix of services in about three to four months.
"We told them we were coming, and we are coming," said SBC spokesman John O'Connor.
The company is fuzzy about exactly what services it will offer to whom and when.
"I'm not going to get into the specifics of the offerings and the prices," O'Connor said. "But we are bundling our services, including voice, data, the Internet and messaging, at about 15 percent less than you can get them from other sources."
Although it plans to extensively deploy its own equipment, SBC will be greatly dependent on Qwest for some network services and elements required to reach customers. For instance, it wouldn't make sense for SBC to run new lines to homes. It would lease them from Qwest.
