Ford's Phil Martens, who had sent the Cobra Concept version back to the design shop, saying it didn't "grab my soul,'' is right. The Cobra Concept is too techie and has no soul. But the GR-1 is inspirational, heart-pounding rock 'n' roll.

GR-1 could stand for Great One
Following Ford's recent home runs with the Mustang, GT and DB9, the GR-1 (Cover Story, Aug. 23) is a grand slam. This is the best-looking car to come out of Detroit in 30 years. Ford must build it.
Roger Garbow, Ridgefield, Conn.
I saw the Ford Shelby GR-1 alongside the Cobra at Concorso Italiano, and photos don't do it justice: The Cobra looked crude by comparison. I agree the Viper is the modern version of the Cobra. But if the Viper GTS is the Daytona coupe, then the GR-1 goes it one better. That's hard for me to say since I own a fine Viper GTS. The GR-1 would make me think about buying a Ford.
