Byline: DUTCH MANDEL
For the week leading to Sunday's car extravaganza crescendo, fog shrouded the Pebble Beach Lodge like a soggy dish towel. Each afternoon, though, the bright northern California light squeezed through, but not before all enjoyed the summertime gloom. Sunday was a different matter entirely. As though demanded by Concours co-chairmen Sandra Kasky and Glenn Mounger, at the crack of dawn glorious rays shimmered on one extraordinary car after another as it came onto the famed golf course's 18th fairway. With this year the 100th anniversary of Rolls-Royce, the 50th anniversary of Ferrari in the United States, and the 50th anniversary of the Mercedes-Benz SL, there was plenty of lustful iron to ogle. Indeed, 210 cars in 27 categories shown by competitors from 30 states and 14 countries went under the judges' scrutiny before one was picked as Best in Show: a 1938 Horch 853A Erdmann & Rossi Sport Cabriolet, opposite page, top, owned by Joseph C. Cassini III from West Orange, New Jersey. The Lodge's staff members are so efficient that two hours after fireworks exploded and confetti fell, a casual observer would be hard-pressed to know anything other than a big party took place. A party, indeed.
