Byline: CURT CAVIN
In the final race at Nazareth Speedway, favorite son Michael Andretti got a championship send-off.
The second-year owner of Andretti Green Racing took control of the Indy Racing League's title chase with the series' first podium sweep. Dan Wheldon won, and with three races remaining, AGR has Tony Kanaan (who finished second) leading by 72 points over Wheldon.
Assuming Kanaan appears at the races at Chicagoland (Sept. 12), California (Oct. 3) and Texas (Oct. 17), to win the series title he needs only to gain another 11 points on Wheldon, and seven on Buddy Rice, who finished fourth in the IRL's 100th race. AGR's Dario Franchitti finished third with the team's fourth driver, Bryan Herta, eighth.
"Another good day,'' said Kanaan, who extended his record string of top-five finishes to 12 races. "We're looking pretty good.''
Andretti, who lives three miles north of this quaint Lehigh Valley track, could not have been happier Sunday, despite the gloomy future of the facility. The track is expected to be sold for its coveted 90 acres.
"This is huge, obviously, with this being the last race here,'' said Andretti, who won CART's first race at Nazareth in 1987. "This makes it feel a little bit better to go out like this.
