It's time for school-supply shopping. That's big business for the stores where you shop.
The National Retail Foundation says this is a big spending time for families. About $14.8 billion will likely be spent this fall on back-to-school clothes and supplies.
Even though you don't purchase most of your school supplies or clothes, you really influence what your parents will buy. At least 86 percent of parents surveyed by the National Retail Foundation say their children have some influence on the type of school gear and clothes chosen.
And kids are spending their own money, too, says Ellen Tolley, a spokesperson for the National Retail Foundation. About $165 million will be spent by kids in elementary or middle school for back-to-school stuff. Sometimes that can mean paying for a fancier backpack or notebook with your own money, with your mom or dad covering the basics, says Ellen.
School supplies, including paper, pencils and crayons, account for about $2.2 billion of that spending nationwide.
So what will you want to get to start the school year off right?
If your school sends out supply lists, that's where you'll want to start.
