Sep. 7--Negotiators from countries in the Bimstec group will meet for the first time in Bangkok today to work out a framework for establishing a free trade area in a seven-country market containing 1.4 billion people.

Bimstec -- Bangladesh-India-Myanmar-Sri Lanka-Thailand Economic Co-operation -- recently added two new members, Bhutan and Nepal. The group has added free trade to its earlier goals of strengthening ties in tourism, transport, investment and trade.

Members first agreed in February to pursue an FTA, according to Pranpree Bahiddha-Nukara, the vice-minister for Commerce and head of the Thai negotiating team ...
