Frederick W. Rueckheim probably wasn't the first person to ever mix low-priced popcorn, peanuts and molasses. But he knew potential when he saw it, and there was plenty of potential in the sweet snack.

So what do you call a German immigrant who changes the way people approach snack food, retailing and the youth market?

In the words of the old TV ad pushing his famous invention, you call that man a Cracker Jack.

Rueckheim's constant inventiveness made him the first to succeed at selling the candied popcorn treat on a wide scale. In the process, he built a snack-food empire, modernized retailing and became a bona fide part of Americana.

More than 130 years later, you can hear of Rueckheim's influence in the lyrics of Albert Von Tilzer's and Jack Norworth's classic "Take Me Out to the Ball Game," baseball's traditional theme for the 7th-inning stretch.
