American Air, Eagle add fees
The airlines' holding firm AMR will begin charging passengers $10 to buy tickets at airport counters and $5 for tickets purchased at its reservation offices as of Sept. 6, a move that the firm forecasts will bring in $25 mil yearly. About 17% of its tickets are sold via the counters and offices. The move follows Northwest's decision to charge; AMR said it's a way to compete with low-cost carriers and their online sales.
US Air, pilots talks continue
Negotiators for US Airways and pilots continued discussing a new labor contract the airline says is necessary to avoid a second trip into bankruptcy. Management proposed cutting pilot pay by as much as 35% and contributions to a retirement plan by as much as 30%, according to sources. A spokesman for the machinists union, meanwhile, said that union remains unwilling to revise its contract and accused management of ignoring proposed changes that could have saved more than $100 mil annually. Shares rose 20% to 2.57.
