Best Buy Q2 comps miss views

The consumer electronics retailer's same-store sales rose 4.3%, missing views of a 5.4% increase, while total sales rose 13% to $6.07 bill. Best Buy was boosted by its high-end Magnolia Audio Video stores; its comps were up 6.8% against Best Buy U.S. stores' 4.4% gain. The chain's international comps rose 3%. Best Buy forecast making 51-53 cents a share ex items in Q2 against views of 50 cents. Shares rose 5% to 49.

J.C. Penney's comps rise 3.8%

The department store's same-store sales in August missed views of a 4.8% gain despite strong sales in the juniors, girls and shoe departments. Sales rose overall except in the Southeast, which didn't have the usual August tax holidays. J.C. Penney's total sales rose 4.3% to $1.54 bil, with its catalog/Internet sales up 6%.
