Q2 mobile phone sales up 35%
Worldwide phone sales passed 156.4 mil units, with strong replacement handset sales in Europe and America and booming sales in Latin America, Gartner said. Nokia's market share fell compared with the year-ago quarter, while Motorola held on to the No. 2 position. Gartner sees total '04 sales reaching 620 mil units; analysts see sales reaching 650 mil units, with excess inventory hurting '05 sales.
Nortel delays restatement again
The telecom equipment maker postponed restating its '03 and Q1-Q2 '04 earnings until Oct., a month later than expected. Nortel, which is cutting 3,500 jobs and firing 7 finance execs in the wake of an accounting scandal, also said it may seek a court order to delay its annual shareholders meeting until next year. It's facing shareholder lawsuits and a Canadian gov't probe. Shares fell 2% to 3.83.
