Like many oncologists, Dr. David Fishman wonders whether he'll be administering chemotherapy treatments to cancer patients in his office much longer.

About 80% of chemotherapy treatments are conducted in a physician's office, but many private-practice oncologists fear they won't be able to afford to do the treatments in-house as of Jan. 1, when Medicare reduces its reimbursement rates for the drugs given in doctors' offices.

Oncologists say the lower rates could force them to send a large number of cancer patients to local hospitals to receive chemotherapy treatments, which in turn could put a strain on hospitals that aren't ready for an onslaught of new cancer patients.

"I think (oncologists) are going to stop accepting Medicare patients. Quite honestly, they can't afford the expense,'' said Dr. Fishman, who runs…
