In an expansion of current health services and sex education courses, Balboa High School became the first school in San Francisco, California, to offer condoms.
Starting May 4, 1992, students may receive condoms at the health center after a one-on-one interview with a clinic worker. "Before they are given condoms, the nurse practitioner will make them well aware that condoms are not 100 percent effective," said Beverly Bradley, supervisor of health programs for the San Francisco Unified School District. "The way to prevent sexually transmitted diseases that is 100 percent effective is abstinence," she said.
