Construction has begun on a first-of-its-kind South San Francisco medical lab which will reinvigorate immune cells in blood drawn from AIDS patients using a new therapy pioneered by Applied Immune Sciences Inc. (AIS), Menlo Park, California.

The 6,384-square-foot facility will include blood storage and processing equipment and administrative offices, but no on-site patient facilities. Blood drawn in clinics or hospitals will be transported to the lab for treatment and returned for reinfusion into the patient.

The new lab will be operated as a joint venture between AIS and Caremark Inc., an affiliate of Baxter Healthcare Corporation. …
