Terror: Hostage taking and murder by Islamic extremists sends a message to would-be noncombatant nations. Like it or not, America's fight is their fight, too.
Suddenly, terrorists seem to be everywhere, attacking just about anyone.
The Islamist group Hamas killed 16 in twin bus attacks in Israel on Tuesday. Islamic militants recently murdered 12 Nepalese in Iraq. Another Islamic extremist group is holding two French journalists hostage. In Russia, an armed gang seized a school Wednesday, taking up to 400 hostages.
Also in Russia, a suicide bomber killed 10 near a Moscow subway station Tuesday and two passenger jets were brought down Aug. 24.
What does it take for nations, including the many that seem to believe they can safely stay out of trouble, to recognize that a world war is going on, and that no one can really be neutral?
The attacks, like many before, are tied to local causes. Whatever specific grievances led them into their wars, terrorists in and around the Islamic world now embrace the same religious and political agenda.
Whether or not they are tied to al-Qaida (which may now be more an ideology than a mere organization), they're working for the same end and espousing the same beliefs. ...
