AMD revs attack on chip market
Advanced Micro Devices CEO Hector Ruiz said the chipmaker plans to break rival Intel's "monopoly" in the chip industry, predicting that in 3-5 years AMD could be part of "true duopoly." AMD aims to increase its share of the dollars spent on microprocessors from less than 10% to more than 25%, he told Reuters. AMD said a strong Sept. will let it meet its quarterly outlook after weak July and August sales. Shares rose 2% to 11.70.
Open Text plunges on Q4 results
The document management software maker's shares fell 22.5% to 16.72, their lowest since Aug. '03 after Open Text missed views of 28 cents a share by a penny and warned that its Q1 profit would be 7-12 cents a share, well below views of 24 cents. It blamed the shortfall on recent acquisitions, including Tuesday's buyout of Vista Plus for $24 mil. The firm stood by its '05 forecast of $1.10-$1.30 a share.
Logitech focuses on laser mouse
The computing products maker will start selling the Logitech MX1000, a mouse that uses a sensor based on a laser. Logitech says the laser-tracking technology works on more surfaces and offers 20 times the sensitivity the LED-based optical mouse. The MX1000 costs $80. Shares rose 1% to 45.70.
