NYSE stocks picked up steam as the day went on, erasing early losses and closing at their highs of the day Tuesday. The Dow, S&P 500 and small-cap S&P 600 all rose 0.5%. Volume gained ground compared to Monday's level.
Mobile TeleSystems broke out of a five-month base, surging 7.86 to 129.36 on more than three times its normal trade. The Street reacted favorably after Mobile posted bullish second-quarter earnings and raised full-year estimates.
The Russian mobile phone service provider cleared its pivot point of 128.10, or 0.10 above the top of its two-week handle. The midpoint of the stock's handle is 124.17, higher than the base's midpoint of 119.78, making this a legitimate breakout. Mobile was featured in the Daily Stock Analysis at investors.com on Monday.
*BJ Services advanced 1.29 to 48.05 in above-average turnover. The provider of pressure-pumping services to the petroleum industry has ramped up profit growth to 155% from 17% over the last five quarters.
