UBS pays discount for Schwab unit

The Swiss banking giant will buy the broker's institutional investment and research division for $265 mil, paying 17.5% less than what Schwab paid for it in November. Schwab is selling the Soundview unit to refocus on retail investors, while UBS will use the buy in a bid to become a leading Nasdaq trader. Schwab expects to record charges of $145 mil-$165 mil due to the sale. UBS fell 11 cents to 67.49; Schwab dipped 2 cents to 9.45.

Statin study blow to Merck drug

The news could boost Pfizer, which makes the leading anti-cholesterol drug, Lipitor. It could also help sales of Vytorin, another cholesterol-lowering pill developed by Merck and Schering-Plough. Merck rose 4 cents to 44.97.
