The joke was that the most conservative speaker at the Republican National Convention would be a Democrat -- Georgia Sen. Zell Miller. Only many Republicans weren't laughing.
This year there are more than the usual moderates on the podium in prime time, partly because the convention is in New York and maybe partly because the moderates' stars are rising.
They'd certainly like you to think so. And some conservatives fear they're right.
It sure looked that way Tuesday night. A steady stream of limousines delivered the high and mighty to the black-tie "Big Tent Event" at Park Avenue's Sky Club.
The event's sponsor, the Republican Majority for Choice, promised it would be the biggest gathering for pro-choice Republicans ever. Tickets were $500 per person, $250 for convention delegates.
