Sep. 1--Thai shares rose 1.98 percent yesterday on news that Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) was considering raising the weighting of Thailand in its MSCI index, which has a heavy influence on global institutional investors.
The Stock Exchange of Thailand index closed at 624.59 points, up 12.14, in trade worth 18.24 billion baht. Leading gains were communications shares, which surged 2.9 percent, property, up 3.46 percent and energy, up 0.76 percent.
Finance Minister Somkid Jatusripitak acknowledged the likelihood of MSCI in adjusting the weighting of the local market in its index.
