On July 13, 2002, Daniel McConville of Dunsmuir, California, was in his mobile home when a fire ignited in the kitchen. Driving by at the time, John Shelby of Millville noticed smoke and stopped to investigate. Peering through a window and finding his view blocked by dense smoke, Shelby yelled to determine if anyone was inside. McConville replied feebly, but audibly.
