2004 SEP 2 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- The prevalence of genital syndromes in women and the syndromic management of vaginal discharge were studied in a community setting in India.
Researchers selected "[a] representative sample [of women] for the state of Tamilnadu . . . using probability proportional to size cluster technique. Thirty clusters were selected from three districts. Demographic, sexual behavior, risk factors, clinical and laboratory data were collected from the selected population using a structured questionnaire."
They cultured samples from 1,157 women to test for Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Haemophilus ducreyi, collected smear samples to test for Trichomonas vaginalis, used polymerase chain reaction to detect Chlamydia trachomatis in urine samples, and tested blood samples for syphilis (RPR and TPHA), hepatitis B (Hbs Ag ELISA), immunoglobulin (Ig)M and IgG antibodies to herpes simplex virus (HSV) 2 (Novum Diagnostics, Germany).
