2004 SEP 2 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- A study of almost 2,200 women with more than two sex partners found that 50% of the women used condoms inconsistently for prevention of sexually transmitted infections, and almost a quarter did not use them at all.
"Many women attending sexual health clinics have multiple partners, and determining factors associated with condom use may provide useful information for health promotion strategies," wrote H.M. Tawk and colleagues at the University of Sydney's Westmead Hospital.
"Demographic and sexual data were obtained from computerized records at the Sydney Sexual Health Centre from 1991 to 1999. Females with >2 partners were categorized according to their condom use in the last 3 months and compared using chi-squared (chi[superscript]2) tests and logistic regression," the researchers explained.
"Of the 2198 women identified, 22% did not use condoms, 28% reported consistent condom use, and 50% inconsistent use," Tawk's group said.
Their statistical analyses revealed that older age and being in a regular relationship were independent variables associated with not using condoms.
