Feb. 26--Each month, FMC Corp. ships thousands of tons of soda ash from its plant in Green River, Wyo., to five PQ Corp. chemical plants in four states from Illinois down to Louisiana.
PQ uses the soda ash to make sodium and potassium silicates, which are used in detergents and other industrial products.
The privately held PQ used to initiate these shipments by calling or faxing FMC's customer-service center. Each transaction generated a lot of paper, and required the attention of employees from many departments at both companies.
In August, FMC and PQ linked their "back-office" computer systems. Now each transaction -- from order to payment -- is handled automatically. All the documents related to shipments of soda ash -- including purchase orders, invoices and receipts -- zip electronically between the two companies.
Both companies said the system was working well.
