CHARLOTTE, N.C. _ Sandra Magee Diaz has been thinking a lot about the future _ her future _ lately. Every other week she has chemotherapy to fight the cancer that has spread to her spine and hips.

She also has been looking to the past, organizing her memories and rediscovering things long forgotten.

Like the summer of 1959, when, challenged by her father, she wrote 100 poems in 30 days to earn $10 to buy material for her ninth-grade cheerleader uniform. "It was the best thing he ever did for me."
