MIAMI _ Venus Williams won't ascend to the No. 2 world ranking for the first time until Monday. Already, she's made the player ahead of her look like a paper champion.

The third-seeded Williams won her 17th straight Ericsson Open match Thursday, defeating top seed and defending champion Martina Hingis 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) on Stadium Court.

For the third time in four years, Williams advanced to the Ericsson final, but she won't know her opponent until today.

Rain washed out all but the first four games of Thursday's evening program at the Tennis Center at Crandon Park, including the semifinal between No. 4 Jennifer Capriati and No. 7 Elena…
