Mar. 4--Metro Milwaukee continued its home construction slowdown in January, with 279 new building permits, 27 percent lower than the 384 a year earlier but a recovery from December's weather-related plunge, a new trade report shows.
The local industry appears to be making a "soft landing" amid signs of trouble in the national economy, said Matt Moroney, executive director of the Metropolitan Builders Association of Greater Milwaukee.
The MBA said there were 171 single-family permits in January, only nine lower than January 2000 and 48 more than December's total of 123.
