But Napster, the idea, lives on.
The Internet music trading service created by Shawn Fanning, a former Cape Cod resident, is facing a near-certain death as result of a lawsuit brought by the Recording Industry Association of America. Judge after judge has said Napster is breaking the law by helping its millions of users illegally exchange copyrighted songs.
But regardless of what happens to Napster, the technology it spawned has taken on a life of its own. Now there are dozens of imitators, including some that may be impervious to the kind of legal challenges facing Napster.
