Mar. 3--SAN FRANCISCO--Napster Inc. said Friday it plans to block music fans from downloading thousands of songs from the popular music-swapping online site this weekend, as a federal judge readied a court order that may close the controversial service.

The announcement was the latest twist in the long-running war between Napster and the world's record labels. Napster revealed it would filter out more than 1 million files of songs from the heavy metal band Metallica, rapper Dr. Dre, the major record labels and others in the music business.
