Mar. 4--Metro Milwaukee continued its new home construction slowdown in January, with 279 new building permits, 27 percent lower than the 384 a year earlier but a recovery from December's plunge, a new trade report shows.
The local industry appears to be make a "soft landing" amid signs of trouble in the national economy, said Matt Moroney, executive director of the Metropolitan Builders Association of Greater Milwaukee.
The MBA said there were 171 single family permits in January, only nine lower than January 2000 and 48 more than December's total of 123.
