Mar. 26--BERKELEY, Calif.--It has endured a massive fire and 22 years of the Rocky Horror Picture Show, but in the end, the UC Theatre could not survive the bottom line.

After months of speculation over its fate, the quirky and beloved film house -- which served up a sizable chunk of the region's art house fare -- will close Thursday, a victim of low profit margins.

"The attendance really hasn't yielded the financial results," said Mike Mullen, senior vice president for Dallas-based Silver Cinemas, which owns the Landmark Cinemas art house chain that includes the UC Theatre. Silver Cinemas filed for bankruptcy last May. …
