Apr. 9--AFTER WAL-MART, CHERRYVILLE MAY REDEFINE RULES : Look no farther than Shelby to understand why Cherryville's mayor and city council are looking to redefine the South Fork watershed boundary so that the Sunbeam Industrial Park is outside the protected area.
Wal-Mart announced last week that it will invest $50 million to build a 1.2 million-square-foot distribution center in Cleveland County, creating 500 full-time jobs.
The kicker: Wal-Mart looked at Cherryville six months ago.
"That's what got the ball rolling," said Cherryville Mayor Wade Stroupe.
Building restrictions in the watershed, however, would have prevented Wal-Mart from building in Sunbeam, he said. Cherryville, population 5,300, has lost 3,800 jobs over the last six years, Stroupe said.
