A deluge of calls, letters, petitions, and visits from librarians to University of Southern Mississippi President Aubrey K. Lucas and other top administrators has saved the School of Library Science (SLS) from closing. Lucas reversed a recommendation from a campus committee and reported to a state higher education coordinating office that the program should be maintained.
Every program in every state-supported university in financially hard-pressed Mississippi underwent a program review during 1991. In the fall, a committee examined the SLS and recommended to Lucas that it be closed.
