Last week, President Bush's huge tax cut took a hit from senators quoting his borrowed slogan, "Leave no child behind."
The Senate on Wednesday surprised many (perhaps even itself) by voting to slash the president's 10-year tax cut by $448 billion, putting half of that into education and half toward paying off the national debt.
The Senate's dramatic move fits neatly with the pro-children message that Mr. Bush has stressed as a candidate, in his first address to Congress, and in a visit just last week to a Boys and Girls Club in Wilmington, Del.
