Apr. 18--About two dozen HSBC Bank USA employees gathered in a computer room Monday to learn how to program with VisualAge for Java.

These employees help the bank develop e-commerce services, such as a business banking package allowing companies to manage checking accounts, process payroll and invoice customers on the Internet.

The federal government is picking up the bill through a $2.8 million training grant to a consortium of 13 companies partnering with the Buffalo & Erie County Workforce Investment Board.

Buffalo was one of 43 communities, out of 550 eligible, to receive part of the $95 million in high-skills training grants the …
