Packaging Firm to Reduce Vancouver, Wash., Work Force by 10 Percent.

May 1--Bemis Co. officials announced plans Thursday to reduce the company's Vancouver plant work force by 10 percent in the face of rising operating expenses and weaker markets.

Approximately 20 people out of the company's 210 hourly employees will lose their jobs, said Mary Lou Idland, plant manager. Bemis employs about 300 at its Vancouver plant on 1401 W. Fourth Plain Blvd., where it makes a variety of multiwall paper bags used to contain such products as fertilizers and dog food.

"If business picks back up, we will call the people back," Idland said.
