May 16--MCLEAN, Va.--Complaining about how its products are marketed, Apple Computer Inc. yesterday unveiled plans to boost sales by opening 25 retail stores across the country this year, starting with outlets in suburban Washington and Southern California.

Apple officials predicted the stores would break even by year's end, then turn a slight profit in fiscal 2002, despite a gloomy retail market for personal computers that has hurt competitors.

"We think we can make this fly and do it quite well," chief executive Steve Jobs said at an appearance in McLean, where one of the first two stores will open Saturday in a tony shopping…
