May 16--MCLEAN, Va.--Complaining about how its products are marketed, Apple Computer Inc. yesterday unveiled plans to boost sales by opening 25 retail stores across the country this year, starting with outlets in suburban Washington and Southern California.
Apple officials predicted the stores would break even by year's end, then turn a slight profit in fiscal 2002, despite a gloomy retail market for personal computers that has hurt competitors.
