Dell Computer Announces Big Round of Layoffs in Central Texas.

May 11--Dell Computer Corp.'s consolidation and cost-cutting strategy isn't limited to moving notebook-computer production from Central Texas to Nashville, Tenn.

Since January, Dell has been shipping some notebook computers to U.S. customers from its assembly plants in Penang, Malaysia. It's part of Dell's continuing effort to cut costs to compete in an increasingly brutal PC price war.

Monday, Dell announced plans to lay off 3,000 to 4,000 workers over the next six months, primarily in Central Texas, a signal it is bracing for a prolonged battle.
