Terry Townsend has been a lawyer and a preschool teacher. And now, if everything goes as planned, she will leave her Charlotte, N.C., home, move to another country for two years, learn a new language and hone skills she can share.

At 50, she says it's obvious she's not a college student. But eager to "do the things I always meant to do but never got around to doing," she applied for a new life.
