Could George Costanza haunt the man who played him? The early line on ABC's Bob Patterson, with Seinfeld sidekick Jason Alexander, is not encouraging.
"He can't carry that show," said Stacey Lynn Koerner, a vice president at New York's TN Media, which buys TV time for advertisers. "I do not believe viewers are ready to accept the Seinfeld people in new roles. More time needs to pass."
Paul Schulman, president of media buyer Advanswers PHD in New York, was not impressed either. "It may be difficult to take Jason Alexander for a half-hour each week," he said. "It's the Joan Rivers syndrome: She's fine in small doses. He's fine as a second banana."
The broadcast networks last week unveiled their fall lineups in New York at presentations called upfronts. The most interest, as always, was in the new series, and programmers will offer 36 hopefuls next fall. Alexander might have failed to wow the advertisers, but the networks earned more positive reviews than a year ago.
