Jun. 21--Call them the Wired Generation. Teen-Agers of the new millennium, who can barely recall a time when there was no Internet, have created a virtual lifestyle around it, using it to study, gossip, hang out, shop, even meet and break up.
A national survey released Wednesday shows just how prevalent spending time online has become in their lives: Nearly 75 percent of American youth ages 12 to 17 are on the Internet at least several times a week, and many say they are fans of instant-messaging tools that bring new dimensions to their social universe.
The report by the Pew Internet & American Life Project shows that the Internet is having a mostly positive impact on teens' relationships with friends, families and schools. And although parents worry about their children's possible encounters with online predators and objectionable sites, they also see the Internet as an essential part of their children's success in school and the workplace.
