Jun. 21--NEWARK, N.J.--The state Board of Public Utilities yesterday hired a Pennsylvania consulting firm to conduct an independent audit of Verizon's books.

According to Deirdra Picou, spokeswoman for the BPU, the board has chosen the Liberty Consulting Group, headquartered in Quentin, Pa., to "conduct a comprehensive review of the financial integrity of Verizon New Jersey."

"The company selected has performed similar reviews of major telecommunications providers for other state commissions and its track record is commendable and provides the board with confidence in this important task," said BPU Commissioner Frederick F. …
