Verizon Asks FCC to Offer Long-Distance Service in Pennsylvania.

Jun. 22--Verizon Communications Inc. moved one step closer to its goal of providing long distance to Pennsylvania consumers as it asked the Federal Communications Commission yesterday for permission to offer the service.

Verizon, the nation's largest provider of local-telephone service, already provides long distance to customers in New York and Massachusetts.

The FCC's ruling on the Pennsylvania request is expected by Sept. 19.

"I'm biased, but I think this is Verizon's strongest filing yet before the FCC," said Verizon-Pennsylvania President Daniel J. Whelan.
