Q. I read your recent column on the dangers of herbal diet pills and would like to know if you have an opinion about Dexatrim Natural Ephedrine Free Formula. I know that PPA was taken out of diet pills to make them "safer" per se. What are your thoughts regarding guarana seed extract or kola nut extract?

A. Since manufacturers of over-the-counter diet pills have discontinued the use of the appetite suppressant PPA (phenylpropanolamine) due to safety concerns, they have scurried to create alternative formulations.
