Jul. 25--Attempts will begin today to revive the long-delayed process of converting telecommunications concessions, a key step toward liberalising the local market.
A committee studying the conversions will hold its first meeting in nearly six months, with representatives of the two state phone companies taking part.
"The first meeting will focus mainly on the guidelines laid down by the Thailand Development Research Institute to identify what have been the major obstructions to successful conversions," said Supachai Pisitvanich, chairman of the TOT board.
"We hope the renewed meetings can achieve some success," added Kraisorn Pornsutee, chairman of the Communications Authority of Thailand.
The previous conversion committee had proposed deleting two of the TDRI's guidelines, said Sombat Uthaisang, a deputy interior minister and deputy chairman of the committee.
The first related to the benefits a private company should or should not retain under the original concession terms, while the second related to compensation a private firm should receive after conversion.
