Thai Steelmakers Urge Action on Dumped Imports from China, Japan.

Jul. 25--Local manufacturers of hot-rolled structural steel are demanding tough counter-measures from the government against dumped imports from China and illegal imports from Japan.

Without any immediate action, the local steel industry could eventually collapse due to unfair competition, said Damri Tunshevavong, managing director of Siam Yamato Steel Co, a Siam Cement affiliate.

The company has filed a complaint with the Department of Foreign Trade of Ministry of Commerce against dumped imports.

While the authorities were conducting investigations, Mr Damri said, dumped imports of structural steel from China continued to flood the local market. In May alone, there was a rush to import some 6,000 tonnes to avoid the anti-dumping duty the ministry might impose.
