Jul. 25--Thailand's "shadow economy", or underground business, ranks first out of 18 Asian countries surveyed, according to Friedrich Schneider, an economist from the Johannes Kepler University of Linz, Austria.
The scope and size of "shadow" economies was increasing day-by-day in many Asian countries, he said, citing high tax and social security contributions as the main driving forces.
Even major developed countries were unable to avoid a rise in hidden economic activities, Dr Schneider said in a research presentation yesterday at the eighth annual conference of the Asia-Pacific Financial Association.
The conference, under the theme "Rebuilding Our Financial Architecture", is being sponsored by the Sasin Graduate Institute of Business Administration and Faculty of Commerce and Accountancy of Chulalongkorn University.
Dr Schneider said that in 1998 and 1999, Thailand was number one among 18 Asian countries, followed by Sri Lanka and Philippines, in the size of the shadow economy compared to GDP, and workers involved compared to the total labour force.
