Jul. 25--The manufacturer of the energy drink Red Bull has insisted that the drink is safe for consumers.
Chaleo Yoovidhya, founder and president of T.C. Pharmaceutical Industries Co, said there was no scientific evidence to prove that a recent death in Sweden had been caused by Red Bull.
One woman died after drinking vodka with Red Bull. Mixing the energy drink with alcohol has become popular among young consumers in clubs.
Mr Chaleo said the product was quite popular in Europe where people mix it with vodka. He said the Red Bull manufacturer in Austria, which holds the licence from the Thai company for the European market, would make a statement to explain the issue to the public soon.
There was also a report from Kuala Lumpur at the weekend that Malaysian health authorities had banned the sale of Red Bull drinks imported from Austria and Thailand.
The ban, said Chua Jui Meng, the Malaysian health minister, was a precaution following news reports that three people in Sweden died when they consumed the drinks after strenuous workouts or had mixed it with alcohol. The ministry banned the sale of the Red Bull blue-can drinks from Austria and Thailand, but is also conducting tests on other Red Bull products.
